The greatest blunder that we commit, is our reluctance to accept things that are different and weird. These are the adjectives we often use for our dreams. We are often too harshly critical about our dreams and expose them to outright rejection considering them to be exactly opposite to reality.

The problem is, this is where and how we begin!!

We take a long time acknowledging that dreams are necessary to life. They are the key to accomplishing great things in life.

I know you wouldn’t believe a thing without stats or scientific back-up so let me help you with some recent researches that clearly elucidate that dreaming enhances creativity and problem-solving.

Research suggests that during dreaming state your brain will cogitate vast swaths of acquired knowledge and information and extract commonalities, creating mindset that can help us find solutions to some of the trickiest problems.

In a study, participants learned to navigate a virtual maze using trial and error and aided by the placement of unique objects—like Christmas trees—at certain junctions in the maze. After this learning session, the group was split in two, half napping and half watching a video for 90 minutes. Nappers were occasionally awoken to ask about the content of their dreams; those watching a video were also asked about thoughts going through their minds.

Afterwards, the participants again tried to solve the maze, and those who napped were significantly better at it than those who didn’t. But the nappers who reported dreaming about the maze were 10 times better at the task than those who napped and didn’t dream about the maze.

Looking at the content of these dreams, it was clear that the participants didn’t dream a precise replay of the learning experience while awake. Instead, they were cherry-picking salient fragments of the learning experience and attempting to place them within the inventory of previously acquired knowledge. This is the importance of dreams in our life and this is how dreaming helps us be more creative.

If this serves as an eye-opener I urge you to be a little more compassionate with your dreams because they serve a purpose & will pave the way to the reality you believed was impossible.

So, how to dream big?

Here are few tips that can help you achieve your dreams and make some of your most unbelievable dreams come true.

1. Believe your dreams:

Don’t begin by discarding them as implausible. “Sometimes the simplest unknown things are considered miracles”. Sometimes the things are right there and it escapes your perception. Take the first step of believing in them. Everything you have ever wanted is a belief away. It is said:

“Your reality is a reflection of your strongest beliefs”.

Every time you believe in that big unreasonable dream, you allowed your brain to trigger new neuronal paths & you allowed your brain RAS ( Reticular Activating System) or your brain’s filter in simpler terms to attract the relevant stimuli to reach your conscious brain. Dreaming big is the first step to success. Dare to dream. Remember,

“Believing it to be impossible is the easiest way to negate the possible”.

2. Make sure it’s your dream:

We often turn a blind eye to our dream but more than that we subconsciously adopt a dream natively not ours. We are so enthralled by the glorious beauty of it’s reality that we often end up adopting it. But what we miss out here is the very fact that it was never a part of us & secondly the effort that the owner put in to get the desired outcome. We look at the lives of super stars, athletes, business tycoons and end up overloading our mind and soul with something that’s inherently is not ours. What happens eventually is, you do begin the journey to replicate the reality in your life but as the trials begin the shine begins to fade and you come face to face with the hard reality. This leaves you confused & kills your self-belief. Seems you relate!

Make sure you take inspiration but do a thorough soul search and get on with a round of interview with your own self. Know your interests, understand your skill set, test you taste, question your aspirations, foresee the reality you want to establish in your life & check if it fit’s in. It’s very similar to how fashion works. Body type, bust size, waist size, hip size etc. vary so does the type of fashion that suits one the best. Don’t just jump in by looking at someone’s ruffled collars. Know your body type, find out your unique style that suits your personality and taste & you are going to kill it.

3. Protect Your Dream:

Sometimes the hurdle in dreaming big is external. It is rightly said you have to think big and dream big. A mediocre upbringing & a constant pressure to become an average ends up making that the only reality you can ever dream of. On the contrary sometimes a tiny dream is butchered at the hands of a glorious grim dream. Most of the dreams are either sacrificed to the normalization of mediocrity or the tyranny of exceptionalism. Make sure you row your way safe to the harbor & the only way you can do it is to hold on to the light at the end of the tunnel that keeps motivating you to stick to that dream. The visualization of the reality that this dream is going to materialize releases a neurotransmitter called dopamine that triggers a motivation wave that can help you override all that negativity surrounding you. Hold on to that motivation wave and steer clear of the odds. Think about your dream on regular intervals, connect with people who inspire you, talk about your dream with like-minded people, learn and prepare yourself before you just jump in, do some ground research. Constantly indulge and pursue your dream. When you constantly do this you create new & positive neuronal paths & every time you repeat the activity you help those neurons to fire up strengthening the path even more until it get’s embedded in your subconscious subsequently helping you to reach your dreams. Don’t forget to work hard and dream big.

4. Plan for your dream:

The most honest dreams are never materialized because the execution was never planned. It’s always good to visualize living your dream life but it is equally important to constantly work on the blueprint. Dreams without goals are just dreams. This is the truth about dreams and goals and exactly where most people go wrong. Follow your dreams and set your goals. A plan of action acts as a shield to counter a slump. Failure is imminent but a thoughtful execution almost always acts as an insurance policy. It makes it easy for you to bounce back because you knew deep down it was coming. Rather than letting go you stick around. Dream it and do it.

5. Your dream will test you:

More than often the dreams in your life will put you into situations where giving up would rather look like an easier option than to continue. And trust me if you are reading this while you are already in a slump this advice will sound idealistic but trust me it’s how you perceive it. Twilight is a time before sunset or sunrise both are correct. It’s how you look at it. The greatest set back often precede the biggest break through. All you are expected to do is to continue & stay consistent to achieve your dreams. Take the lessons & keep adding to your wisdom.
